Celebrate national women’s month in style

August is becoming synonymous with Women’s Month, which is a pretty great thing if you ask us. It’s a decent chunk of time to celebrate all the achievements that women have made and the important role that women of all races and religions have played to create a better South Africa.

If you’re wondering how you can celebrate women and make a difference this month, then the queens from our very own kingdom have some suggestions to get you going.

Know what you’re celebrating

Most of us know that the 9 August is National Women’s Day, but not many are aware that it’s because more than 20,000 women united in a mass demonstration to protest the unjust pass laws enforced on women in South Africa.

So, do a little research about South African women who made a difference, like Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. And while you’re at it, why not get to know more about courageous women in history from around the globe? There’s a wealth of queens, pharaohs, scientists, painters, and Roman empresses that changed the course of history.

Spend on the sisterhood

In honour of National Women’s Month, consider finding a foundation or charity that supports women in need and women’s rights, like Powa or the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women & Children, and donate to their cause. You might even find that there are other ways that you can help the organisation of your choice, such as volunteering.

Listen to legendary ladies

Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba, PJ Powers, Rebecca Malope… We are a nation blessed with gifted singers. In fact, the list of legendary ladies that you can get your celebrations started with will surely have you in a good mood for the whole of August, so why not create a legendary ladies’ playlist for the month?

Get (A) physical

If you’re going to make a change in this lifetime, you need to make sure that you’re fighting fit. That means visiting your doctor to make sure that everything is A-OK. Use this checklist of questions you should ask your doctor and get ahead of anything that could prevent you from having a positive impact on your community.

A few questions to ask your doctor:

  • Should you be making any changes to your birth control?

  • When should you schedule your first mammogram?

  • Should you undergo genetic testing for cancer?

  • Are there any preventative measures you could be taking on a regular basis?

From the entrepreneurs, mothers, and doctors, to the public officials and teachers, the women in this country are truly a force to be reckoned with. They’re nation-changers, history-makers, life-givers, and King Price salutes them for all that they have done and all that they are yet to accomplish.
