My parents were right: Car insurance

As long as there have been cars on the road, there have also been fender-benders, pedestrian incidents and  unfortunate accidents. If you’ve ever faced the financial consequences of these circumstances, it’s hard not to hear your parents’ voices in your head.

They always seem armed with wise sayings, and probably told you all about the benefits of getting car insurance. Did you listen to their advice? If not, we suggest you begin now.

To get you started, we pulled together a few parental gems that demonstrate just how smart your folks are:

‘If your friends jumped off the building, would you do it too?’

We’ve all heard this one: Don’t follow the crowd, and march to the beat of your own drum. Sounds pretty simple, but sometimes you can’t resist the temptation to do as the cool kids do. They seem to be having an awesome time.

For instance, your daredevil friend, Bill, drives around willy-nilly without car insurance. Sure, he’s got a few extra bucks at the end of the month, but what would he do if someone nicked that rusty old jalopy of his? He certainly wouldn’t be rolling in the dough for long.

‘I didn’t know I raised a savage’

Picture the scene: You’re reversing out of a parking bay, when suddenly you hear a crunch and a scrape. ‘What could that be?’ you think. Then slowly, you raise your eyes to the rear-view mirror again and see a large bakkie stopped behind you, with an even larger dent in its fender.

You know exactly what’s coming next – the dreaded exchange of details and that question you didn’t want to hear:

‘Do you have insurance?’

Don’t let your reply be a sheepish ‘no’…. You weren’t raised by wolves.

‘Money doesn’t grow on trees’

Learning to manage your finances is a vital life skill, and car insurance can help. No one asks or prepares to have an accident, because they can cost thousands of rands at a time. Surely you’d want to protect yourself from such a predicament…right?

The only people who could get away with not taking out policies are those fortunate enough to have a money tree….Which we sadly know doesn’t exist.

‘One day, you’ll thank me’

When you really think about it, all of that parental nagging, lecturing and preaching has moulded you into the functioning adult that you are today. With your mom or dad’s guidance, you’re now able to make informed decisions, hold down a job and, if you’re smart, be fully insured. So it’s safe to say that the day has come to thank them…before they say ‘I told you so’.

And if you haven’t gotten car insurance, there’s no better time to do it. We know that it’s tough to be a grown-up, but it’s much easier when you have a king on your side.
