Keep your tyres in roadworthy condition

How to keep your tyres in top condition.

One of the super important conditions of cover with many insurers, including King Price, is that you make sure that your car’s tyres are always in roadworthy condition.

Given that tyres are 1 of the most crucial parts of your car, it’s not just important to keep them in good nick to help you during (or even to avoid) a claims situation… It also helps to prevent you from being stranded on the side of the road, or worse, having a blowout and ending up in a life-threatening accident. That’s because tyres that aren’t in roadworthy condition can result in accidents and also aggravate the damage caused during accidents.

Check out our handy list of DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to making sure that your tyres are in tip top condition.

DON’T… Drive hard.

Whenever you get the feeling that you’re smack dab in the middle of a Fast and the Furious scene, slow down. This ain’t the movies! How you drive impacts your tyres (and your life expectancy). Things like accelerating too quickly and braking too hard will damage your tyres, causing them to deteriorate faster and become un-roadworthy.

DO… Check your tyre pressure regularly.

One of the leading causes of tyre-related crashes is underinflated tyres. This is mainly because flatter tyres leads to premature tread wear, which leads to blowouts. By checking your tyre pressure regularly you can prevent driving on underinflated tyres and extend their life. And it’s much easier to keep on top of than you think… All you have to do is say yes. So the next time you fill up your tank, just say yes to the fuel attendant’s offer to check your tyre pressure.

HINT: Check your owner’s manual or the placard on your car’s door frame to find the appropriate tyre pressures for your car.

DO… Rotate your tyres.

Part of keeping your tyres in good condition and to get the maximum life out of them is to rotate your tyres every 8,000 to 10,000km. If you buy a set of tyres from your local tyre store, they may provide free tyre rotation. If they don’t, tyre rotations are fairly inexpensive.

DON’T… Install mismatched tyres.

Mismatched tyres can negatively impact the handling of your car and cause more wear and tear on the rest of your tyres, as well as other components of your car. This is especially true if you mix tyres from different manufacturers on the same axle. That’s why it’s best to stick to the same manufacturer for each set.

DO… Replace your tyre valves timeously.

It’s not the fanciest of doodads or thingamajigs, but tyre valves are entirely necessary to keeping your tyres roadworthy and you safe on the road. You see, a valve that’s in good condition forms an airtight seal with the tyre, which helps maintain the correct air pressure in the tyre. A worn out or damaged valve can cause air loss into the tyre, especially when driving at high speeds. It also lets the outside dust particles get into the tyre, which reduces its lifespan.

HINT: Replace your valve and valve caps every time you buy new tyres.

At the end of the day, we want you to be safe and sound on the road… And if you are in the unfortunate place of having to make a car-related insurance claim, then we want to be able to make sure that you put into a position that’s better than the 1 you started in. That’s why we urge you to take care of your 4-wheeled baby, from the tyres to the windscreen, so you do not get into a trouble.
