‘Normal’ car insurance won’t cover a blown engine

If you’re not a mechanic, car engines are phenomenally complex machines that can suffer from a variety of issues, including run of the mill wear and tear, or something more serious, like mechanical failure. Worse than the issue of just not understanding what’s going on and what’s going wrong are the costs associated with blown engines.

When a car engine blows, it can be a painfully costly and stressful experience. Thankfully, that’s where the king has your back. Insurance is a welcome relief in these situations, just knowing that while it’s inconvenient to have happened, it won’t be coming out of your pocket.

That said, it’s a matter of getting the right cover. Just because you have cover for your car, doesn’t automatically mean that all the things you expect to be insured actually are. A lot of car owners think that when they get a comprehensive policy, a blown engine is covered because this is the level of car insurance that covers the most risks and incidents. And yes, comprehensive car insurance does cover the most and is generally the best option to go for.

But when it comes to mechanical failure, like a blown engine, you’ll need to look at adding in a spot of extra cover.

The thing about car insurance

We thought we’d start with what won’t cover a blown engine. Generally, car insurance policies in South Africa won’t do the trick. As in, they won’t cover engine failure or mechanical breakdowns resulting from wear and tear.

For instance, our own royal comprehensive car insurance covers accident damage, theft and hi-jacking, and for damage to other people’s property (which in the insurance world is known as third party liability) as the result of a car accident that you’re involved in. But, to be fully transparent (because that’s how we do things in our kingdom), our royal car insurance won’t cover a blown engine.

There is an exception, and that’s when we’re covering the costs of repairing your engine if it is damaged as a result of an accident that you’re involved in.

So what will cover a blown motor is covered?

In our kingdom, we offer optional extras, which are products that come with a small additional premium but offer major peace of mind. In the case of the blown motor, the optional extra is the king’s car warranty cover.

This policy ensures that car parts that break are repaired or replaced. This way, your car’s back on the road ASAP, without denting your wallet in the process.

To be clear, the king’s car warranty isn’t a maintenance or service plan, but it will pay towards the cost of repairing certain car parts after an unforeseen mechanical or electrical breakdown. This includes the cost of the necessary labour and associated outwork.

So, does your car qualify? Probably, but just to make sure, you must have the following:

  • An actual car. No figments of the imagination allowed.
  • The car doesn’t have to be insured (with us or at all), but it needs a full service history.
  • You must reside permanently in SA.

Just in case, here are some safety tips

It’s all good and well to have the right cover for these types of things, but in the moment, what should you do if your car engine blows to stay safe?

Here’s what to do if your car engine blows:

  • Call the king so we can send help ASAP. You’ll probably need to be towed and this is best arranged by your insurer.
  • Get a diagnosis: Once your car is at the repair shop, our expert mechanics will diagnose the problem and provide an estimate for the cost of repairs.
  • Consider your options: If you don’t have the king’s car warranty and your insurance policy doesn’t cover engine failure, the costs come out of pocket, so you’ll choose between paying the bill, selling your car for parts or trading it in for a new 1.

Now that we’ve gone through the ins and outs of how to get insurance to cover a blown motor, it’s time to get a quote. And all that’s needed, really, is to get in touch with us.
